Well, Shanin and I went with a few friends to go and see M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, hoping to be wowed by another weird, creepy, funny, twisting story. However, our hopes turned out to be unfounded. This movie, while it has many of the same features that made Signs, The Village, and Unbreakable, didn’t jell well enough to be truly good.
The premise of the movie is that, suddenly and for some unknown reason, people start becoming disoriented and then kill themselves. It starts in New York’s Central Park, then the occurrence spreads to other open places, affecting progressively smaller populations. Marky Mark is a teacher at a school in Philadelphia and is one of the first people to try and puzzle this out (while running for his life, of course). One of his co-workers and friends, played by John Leguizamo (also in Moulin Rouge) goes with him to get out of the affected area.
