Geri called me a couple of days ago to compare schedules. We were beginning to miss each other (I had emailed that I missed her), so we needed to find time to hang out. Our schedules didn’t allow a lot of time for seeing each other, but we managed to squeeze a plan together to have dessert on Wednesday night. I contacted my favorite bakery, Patisserie du Josh, to put in an order for something special. I had to wait around in the bakery, but the Chef let me taste the batter. I could tell from that little taste that I was going to ooh and awe Geri. Some times I wonder if she hangs out with me because I have a good food source. The chef let me taste the finally product drizzled with his famous frosting, since I was paying soooo much for the cupcakes. I must say he out did himself. I will get the final review from Geri tonight, but I hope she hates them, so I can have more. If I get any requests I might be able to get the recipe if I cough up a little more payment.
Went and saw Batman. It was inevitable. I was in the theaters for all the releases of the Caped Crusader, and there was no way in hell I was going to miss this one on the big screen. So Shanin, my parents, Andrew, and I went to see it on IMAX. Nothing bigger than that, right?
I should probably point out that I’ve never seen a movie on IMAX. At least, not one I can recall. I thought I was prepared for the very large screen size, but I found out that I wasn’t. We were in the second row after the walkway in, so they weren’t the best, but they were far from bad. The previews rolled, and it was easy to tell that the wide screen format (known as “scope” to theater geeks or former projectionists) left several feet of screen unused top and bottom. I figured that the entire movie would be this way, but due to the sheer size of the screen, I was cool with that.
Josh and I invited Debben and Kyle over for dinner Saturday night to celebrate Debben’s whatever year birthday. I had framed a scrapbook page that I had made with Josh’s help. The page was dedicated to her family who all got together for Jakob’s 7th birthday at Chuck E Cheese; where I managed to get some great pictures of all of them having fun. When they arrived we busted out the drinks and Debben ripped open her present. Afterwards, Josh and Kyle went downstairs to BBQ the Jamacian Jerk Chicken recipe he got from visiting our relatives in Jersey. He also prepared some seasoned potatoes to be roasted in the oven. The food was awesome when Uncle Matt made it, so we begged for the recipe. Josh did a fabulous job replicating the sauce, and the chicken was juicy. Josh’s version was slightly more spicy, but we still wolfed down every piece. Jamacian Jerk is now on the favorite list thanks to Josh’s excellent job.
We lost part of our lives watching that movie. The movie started with a urban battle scene, but not as well done as Saving Private Ryan. I don’t really care for war movies, they usually leave me depressed. This movie was no different. The movie seemed to be headed towards life after combat. I really didn’t want to watch a movie about soldiers trying to cope with their post war lives. I like to use movies as a way to escape, but war movies rarely turn out positive. The character development was good, I liked how the main character, Brandon, wanted to start a new life. I thought Steve and Brandon had begun to realize the stupidity of war. I sympathized with Brandon, so was pissed off when the government re-enlisted him after his tour was over. I wasn’t suprised about his helplessness against the government; it just made me mad. I thought it was fucked up that he had to give up his life and go accross the border to escape injustice. I was proud of his courage, until circumstances sucked him back in the death trap of the US military. I know that there are not always happy endings, but even if he did escape accross the border it wouldn’t of been a happy ending, but an unjust sacrifice after so many for the government. I would of been happier if the movie would have ended with him in Mexico. The movie was slow, depressing, and pissed me off in a very informative way.
You liked it, I loved it! What not enough action, too much character development. What’s wrong with you guys? The movie had the right balance of action, drama, and comedy. The character development created a link between the audience members, allowing them to sympathize with the characters. I found myself rooting for Hancock, and wondering why he was so fucked up. I liked the fact that he wasn’t a normal super-hero. I also liked the unusual love story (I won’t say more, don’t want to ruin it). The first plot twist (yes there is more than one) was a mind blower. After that I was on the edge of my seat, biting my nails. I would recommend this movie. It is going on the to be owned list.
