Well, Shanin and I went with a few friends to go and see M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, hoping to be wowed by another weird, creepy, funny, twisting story. However, our hopes turned out to be unfounded. This movie, while it has many of the same features that made Signs, The Village, and Unbreakable, didn’t jell well enough to be truly good.
The premise of the movie is that, suddenly and for some unknown reason, people start becoming disoriented and then kill themselves. It starts in New York’s Central Park, then the occurrence spreads to other open places, affecting progressively smaller populations. Marky Mark is a teacher at a school in Philadelphia and is one of the first people to try and puzzle this out (while running for his life, of course). One of his co-workers and friends, played by John Leguizamo (also in Moulin Rouge) goes with him to get out of the affected area.
Okay, I know what you’re thinking. You’re wondering why I bothered to watch a documentary about a spelling bee. You’re wondering if I’m a geek. You’re wondering if I tried to spell the words as they came up. The answers (in reverse order) are yes, yes, and because I get (essentially) free rentals from Blockbuster. However, Spellbound is actually pretty darn good and can get a little tense.
We went to see the new Indiana Jones movie, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It was entertaining, but didn’t meet our expectations.
My favorite Indiana movies are the first one (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and the third one (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). I really love the classic action adventure in the first movie, and humor in the last movie, like the play between father and son. I like the strong female roles in some of the movies, and it was nice to see the same leading female character come back to do Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
It started as a simple thing, really. Both Shanin and I said to each other, “You know, some sweet potato fries would be good.” However, as the days went by and we didn’t fulfill our want, it slowly became an urge, then a hankering, rose into a yen, bloomed into a desire, and suddenly we were faced with an all-out craving!
Sweet potato fries are, just as they sound, french fries made from sweet potatoes rather than Russets or whatever they use everywhere else. They are scrumptious. The only time I’ve ever had them was at this place in St. Helena called Taylor’s Refresher; this place is awesome if you like well made designer hamburgers. They’ve got lots of different things to put on their burgers, have amazing shakes, an extensive wine list (St. Helena is in the middle of Napa Valley, after all), and are home to sweet potato fries. The only problem with this is that Taylor’s is about 2-1/2 hours from San Jose; not close enough to satisfy even a full-blown craving. Thus begins the Quest for Sweet Potato Fries.
