New Jersey

Sulivan ClanBoston was very educational, and we loved the history, but New Jersey was a blast. From the first day we got there it was like a never ending party. The first day we arrived in Sparta to visit with Rich, Suzanne, and the triplets at the house in Lake Mohawk. They took us on a tour of the houses around the lake in their speed boat. There were so many different types of houses. Rich and Suzanne told us which ones had been recently remodeled and their short comings. They treated us to a fabulous grilled dinner out on the patio by the lake. We talked, ate, drank, and had a great time. At the end of the night we were exhausted with traveling and partying. We were greatful to Zach and Jon who were nice enough to give up their rooms for us.

Boston

Since we were already in Massachusetts, we figured we go and check out Boston; after all, when’s the next time we’ll be able to get over there? So, with my parents, we set out to see some of the city which is home to tons of American history!

Our DuckFirst stop (or, rather, attraction), is a Duck Tour. The concept is simple: get on an amphibious vehicle created by the military to go over land and sea and be driven (and boated) around Boston on a whirlwind tour of famous locations, including Samuel Adams’ grave site, the place where Cheers was purported to be (it was really filmed in LA; just like everything else), and the site of the Boston Massacre (the stadium in which the Celtics play; they’d just won the NBA Championships like a week before we went to Boston). Note: We also saw the REAL site of the Boston Massacre, just so you know. Anyway, our guide was fun and had a bunch of interesting information, but apparently wasn’t as funny as the guy my folks had ridden with before. Oh well!

Old Sturbridge Village

The morning after the wedding, we decided to catch a little bit of history. We pointed our car towards Old Sturbridge Village to check out some colonial houses with docents in costume. The place was literally a little village; there were quite a few buildings.

Oregon

Thursday, June 5th, my mom and I dragged our butts out of bed to catch a flight to Oregon. We only woke up when we got our Starbucks at the airport. Our first flight was okay, but the connecting flight was late, which messed up our whole day. We were going to drive down to the Undersea Museum in Newport, but didn’t have enough time. On the way I played with Mom’s handheld GPS to figure out how it works. It sucked because we started the drive only to turn around after going almost half way. We ended up eating real late after checking into our hotel.

Cave FormationsThe first day we woke up early to check out the Oregon Caves. I worked on entering information in Mom’s navigation tool for the upcoming events. The GPS seemed to have a personality of its own, so we named it Navie. When we got to the cave the guide told us there were 550 steps, but Mom still made it with no problems. The California Caves are better, but we still had a good time. We saw the longest tree root, a bat, and some other world records. There weren’t any angel wings and few stalactites and stalagmites. We had the most fun buying souvenirs and gifts. Mom found two really cool rings.

Yosemite 16 mile hike

Waterfall we crossedI also planned a trip to Yosemite with my dad. We left Sunday afternoon on June 1st. The drive there and back was very strange because normally when in a car with my father untold numbers of circumstances combine to cause intolerable traffic conditions, but this time everything went quite smoothly. The trip was planned last minute, so my guess is the gods were taken off guard. When we got there we did discover that there was a mistake in our reservations. The Delaware Company only had us reserved for one night. We were very disappointed, but didn’t let that change our super hiking plans. We went to the local pizza joint to drown our sorrows in food and beer.

The next morning we got up early for Dad. We had a mini breakfast in our room after gearing up, and headed out the door. The morning was crisp and clear with promises of quickly dissipating to an unwelcoming heat that hikers hate. We started out at a brisk pace (thanks to the flat trails from the lodge to the trail head). The further up we went the farther Dad got. On the back of my right heel a blister plotted to slow my progress. Eventually, Dad asked if he was going to fast, and I explained my perilous condition. We decided to find a good place to fortify my heel with special blister pads that thwart their efforts of destruction.
